UNICEF Reveals Alarming Impact: Floods Displace 650,000 Nigerian Children in 7 Years

Nigeria has become the nation most exposed to the effects of climate change on children worldwide, with 650,000 children forced to flee their homes due to flooding, according to UNICEF. The alarming displacement occurred between 2016 and 2023, making more than 110 million Nigerian children at risk due to rising temperatures, severe storms, floods, and droughts.

Dr. Salisu Dahiru, the Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change, emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria to address climate change. He called for a swift and comprehensive strategy that considers the needs of marginalized groups, particularly women and children, in both decision-making and execution.

Nigeria continues to experience widespread flooding in various states, prompting the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) to issue warnings about heavy downpours in the coming months. NiMet advised residents to drive carefully and avoid crossing surface runoff waters, which have strong undercurrents. The report on Nigeria's exposure to climate change effects on children comes on World Children's Day, raising awareness of the need to protect and prioritize the well-being of children in the face of environmental challenges.
