Twelve fatalities reported in Benue road accident
At Ngido village along the Kastina-Ala – Zaki Biam road in Benue State, a tragic motor accident claimed the lives of at least 12 individuals.
A witness revealed that the tragic incident took place around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday and involved two vehicles—an overcrowded commercial Golf car carrying nine passengers, including a female child, and a private Nissan car with three occupants. This accident marked the second occurrence at the same location in recent times.
According to reports, the collision occurred when the vehicles ran into each other in a head-on collision while one of them attempted to avoid a pothole at the accident site. Eight passengers from both vehicles lost their lives instantly, and four others, rushed to the hospital, succumbed to their injuries shortly after. Sources revealed that a similar incident had recently taken place at the same location, involving another attempt to avoid the same pothole.
In that case, while serious injuries were sustained, no lives were lost. Confirming the incident, Mr. Steve Ayodele, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, attributed the crash to overspeeding. He stated, "It was a head-on collision; one of the vehicles was trying to avoid a pothole and ram into an oncoming vehicle. I guess it was as a result of overspeeding; otherwise, they would have been able to maneuver their way."
