Tinubu names inaugural female Director-General for NACA

President Bola Tinubu has named Dr. Temitope Ilori as the new Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA).

 Dr. Ilori, the first female to hold this position, commenced her initial four-year term on February 22, 2024.

 Toyin Aderibigbe, the Head of Public Relations and Protocol at NACA, confirmed the appointment.

 Dr. Ilori succeeds her predecessor, Dr. Gambo Aliyu, who served as DG from June 2019 until February 2024.

 Before her appointment, Dr. Ilori held the position of Senior Lecturer in the Department of Community Medicine at the University of Ibadan. Additionally, she served as a Consultant Family Physician in the Department of Family Medicine at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

 Dr. Ilori earned her MBBS degree from the University of Ibadan and completed her residency training at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria. She graduated as the top Fellow of the Faculty of Family Medicine at the West African College of Physicians in April 2012, receiving the A.O. Senbanjo Prize. Additionally, she is an Associate Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.

 Furthermore, Dr. Ilori holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science Degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Currently, she is pursuing her PhD at the Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa, sponsored by the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa. Her research interests encompass Primary Care, Immunization, Public Health Nutrition, Non-Communicable Diseases, and Women’s and Child’s Health. She is a prolific researcher with over 30 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals to her credit.

 The statement highlighted her active engagement in policy formulation and strategic planning. From 2011 to 2014, she served as the Commissioner for Health in Osun State, Nigeria. Additionally, she held the positions of Chairperson for the Osun State Agency on Control of HIV/AIDS and Chairperson for the Osun State Technical Working Group on Immunization.
