The House of Representatives encourages tertiary institutions to implement a semester-based payment
On Thursday, the House of Representatives urged the management of the nation's universities, polytechnics, and other tertiary institutions to embrace a semester-based school fee payment model. The Representatives observed that this approach would alleviate challenges associated with the current session-based system.
The House's decision came after adopting a motion presented by Taura Sa’ad, a member of the All Progressives Congress representing Ringim/Taura Federal Constituency, Katsina State. Leading the debate on the motion titled, "Call on Nigerian universities and tertiary institutions to adopt a semester–based school fee payment system," Sa’ad, on behalf of the House, highlighted the increasing demand for cost-effective and efficient education financing models in tertiary institutions across the country.
"The House acknowledges that the existing annual school fee payment system in Nigeria poses financial challenges for students and families, particularly in light of recent subsidy removal and the single-window forex policy," expressing awareness of the expected advantages associated with adopting a semester-based school fee payment system for tertiary institutions," he stated.
The legislator additionally emphasized that various international universities, such as the University of California and the University of Sydney, have recently introduced semester-based fee payment systems to enhance financial convenience and alleviate the burden on students and parents.
He emphasized that the House "acknowledges that implementing this payment system can alleviate financial strain on students, enhance access to higher education, and establish a more transparent financial structure for institutions."
Consequently, the legislators called on tertiary institutions to embrace a semester-based school fee payment system and directed the Federal Ministry of Education to collaborate closely with institutions and stakeholders in the education sector to offer the necessary support for implementing the school fee payment system.
Moreover, they instructed the Committees on University Education, Polytechnics and Higher Technical Education, and Federal Colleges of Education to examine the feasibility of adopting a semester-based school fee payment system, taking into account the unique needs and circumstances of each institution. The committees are mandated to report back within four weeks for additional legislative action.
