Soldier in Ogun takes own life due to 'unpaid allowances
A member of the Nigerian Army, assigned to 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala, Abeokuta, Ogun State, named Boyi ThankGod, reportedly fatally shot himself in the head.
An anonymous source within the Army revealed that the soldier took his own life while on standby duty on Monday, coinciding with Nigeria's observance of Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
The source, confirming the incident on Monday, January 15, mentioned that an ongoing investigation seeks to uncover the reasons behind the soldier's self-inflicted death.
Another informant disclosed that the deceased soldier had expressed concerns about unpaid allowances and displayed signs of depression leading up to the tragic event on Monday.
According to the source, "The Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed on Monday, took a somber turn for the 35 Artillery Brigade, as a young soldier named Boyi Thankgod took his own life. He was assigned to Headquarters 35 Artillery Brigade in Abeokuta, Ogun State, and was on standby duty at the brigade headquarters."
"He succumbed to depression and low morale within the system. His acquaintances noted his waning interest in the army, complaints about corruption in the military, and diminished morale."
"We await the completion of the military police investigation to determine the factors that led to this tragic incident," the source added.
As of press time, attempts to contact the brigade's spokesperson, Mohammed Goni, for comments were unsuccessful.
