Shell Nigeria Pledges Support to Government for Renewable Electricity Supply"
Shell Nigeria Plc has announced its commitment to collaborate with the Nigerian government in delivering electricity to millions of people through renewable energy sources. These sources encompass solar, wind, water, and other naturally replenished options, distinguishing them from finite and polluting non-renewable sources like coal, oil, and natural gas.
The company plans to implement renewables as an off-grid energy solution, particularly targeting areas without access to the national grid. Mr. Osagie Okunbor, Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited and Country Chair of Shell Companies in Nigeria, revealed this initiative during a ministerial panel session on 'Navigating the New Energy World Order: Security, Transition, and Finance' at the 7th Nigerian International Energy Summit in Abuja.
In a statement by the Media Relations Manager, Abimbola Essien-Nelson, the company expressed its commitment to aiding Nigeria in utilizing gas as a transitional fuel.
Shell emphasized that Africa has the capability to unleash the energy sector's potential and promote energy security, transition, and economic prosperity through the adoption of partnerships, technological innovation, and sustainable financing. The company emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive approach that addresses efficiencies in the development of abundant conventional energy sources in Africa, which will remain crucial in the present and near future.
Represented by Mrs. Elohor Aiboni, the Managing Director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited, Okunbor highlighted that international partnerships and collaborations could facilitate the adoption of best practices, advanced technologies, and innovations. This, in turn, would optimize operations and reduce emissions.
He mentioned the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership, pointing out that SPDC and SNEPCo have utilized it to oversee and mitigate methane emissions arising from their operations.
According to him, the core challenges confronting the world and senior executives in the energy sector revolve around energy security, transition, and finance. He emphasized that ensuring secure and uninterrupted access to affordable energy is crucial for economic growth and development in every country, particularly in emerging economies such as those in Africa.
Discussing Shell's contribution to the advancement of the energy sector in Africa, Okunbor highlighted its "long-established presence" in various countries such as Nigeria, Egypt, Namibia, Ghana, South Africa, and Tunisia.
Using Nigeria as an example, he pointed out Shell's close collaboration with the government, partners, and other stakeholders. This collaboration aims to harness gas as a transition fuel, promote the development of Nigerian content, and deploy renewables as an off-grid energy source for millions of households.
"In general, we are witnessing notable advancements in collaboration, with promising opportunities on the horizon," remarked Okunbor.
