Reps C’ttee slams slow pace of Abuja-Kaduna road project
The House of Representatives' ad hoc committee evaluating the progress of work on the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano road is dissatisfied with the road's Kaduna-Abuja section. The committee deemed the contractor's slow pace of work on the Abuja-Kaduna segment unacceptable and promised to do everything possible to ensure that the road project is completed in a timely manner for motorists' use.
Aminu Jaji, Chairman of the Committee, made this statement while leading members on an oversight visit to inspect the project on Sunday.
Remember that last week, the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, threatened to revoke the contract if the contractors did not return to the site within seven days and complete the project on schedule.
He was disappointed by the road's slow completion rate since it was awarded in 2018.
During the oversight, Jaji stated that the committee would intervene and resolve the issue so that work could resume immediately.
He stated, "We'll do our best to ensure that everything is done in accordance with the contractual agreement and any other applications that must be filed with the National Assembly."
"Since the National Assembly has stepped in, I believe both the contractors and the Minister must maintain their positions to ensure that the necessary actions are taken in accordance with the contractual agreement.
"So, for us, we won't know the condition until we receive it in writing, and we've requested all relevant information from the Ministry.
"We are going to write to all relevant agencies, including those that are responsible for this palliative exercise that is taking place on this Abuja-Kaduna road."
He urged motorists to be patient, promising that the roadworks would be completed soon.
He stated, "Based on the demand placed on this ad hoc committee, we decided to embark on an assessment tour today.
"We've seen a lot, so we said we couldn't do anything but come and see for ourselves. Seeing for ourselves will help us decide what to do, and we've already evaluated the nature of the work and the problem.
"Everyone can see now that the work has been recognised for nearly six years. The contractors work too slowly. That is why the House felt it was critical to establish the committee under Speaker Tajudeen Abbas."
The oversight was intended to assess the contractors' project milestones as well as the Federal Government's ongoing palliative work.
