Pregnant Woman detained for assaulting Mother in Rivers

The Rivers State Police Command apprehended a pregnant woman, Blessing Godday, accused of fatally stabbing Mrs. Imeran Idema over a dispute involving a stolen bunch of plantains in Adada community, Abua/Odual Local Government Area. The incident, which transpired on January 28, 2003, involved Blessing, a 32-year-old mother of nine, allegedly attempting to flee with the plantains for her children's food. Mrs. Idema, overseeing the plantation, intervened, leading to a heated argument and the tragic stabbing. Blessing was arrested by the police on Friday.

A witness detailed the incident to our correspondent, stating, "Mrs. Imeran Idema, wielding a machete, promptly confronted Blessing and demanded she relinquish the bunch of plantains. 'Drop that plantain,' Imeran shouted as she closed in on Blessing, who, in turn, held a sharp machete from the illicit harvest. Rather than complying, Blessing sprinted towards another exit. Imeran pursued, apprehending the fleeing woman and brandishing the machete as a threat."

"Blessing came to a halt, turning to confront Imeran. A heated confrontation ensued, resulting in Imeran striking Blessing's right foot.

Subsequently, Blessing relinquished the bundle she was carrying and retaliated fiercely with her machete. Swift and determined, Blessing delivered two cuts to Imeran's head and shoulder.

Overwhelmed by pain, Imeran collapsed, prompting Blessing to swiftly depart the scene, abandoning the bunch of plantains before fleeing.

Upon hearing Imeran's cries, members of her family rushed to her aid, arranging for her medical treatment and promptly reporting the incident to the police."

Further on, the undisclosed informant stated, "The police apprehended Blessing and, following an interrogation, released her to seek medical care for the injury on her foot.

"Subsequently, she was reapprehended, and upon her arrival at the police station, she was informed of Imeran's demise."

Upon reaching out for confirmation, Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the state police command, verified the incident, confirming that the suspect had been formally charged in court.

Iringe-Koko affirmed, "Indeed, I can confirm the occurrence. The lady was taken into custody, and legal proceedings have been initiated in court."
