Police kill two bandits in Benue

Two alleged bandits were slain by Benue state police on Sunday in the Katsina-Ala Local Government Area.

The state Police Command Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, said in a statement on Monday that members of Operation Zenda had broken into the bandits' hideaway in Tse Uza, Mbatyula Council Ward in Katsina-Ala LGA.

"The bandits engaged the police in a gunfight to prevent an invasion of their camp upon their arrival," the spokeswoman stated. "However, they were defeated by the police team's superior firepower."

"While other suspects managed to flee, two bandits sustained bullet wounds. A doctor pronounced them dead, and their corpses were placed at General Hospital, Ukum.

Among the artefacts found in the camps, according to Anene, are two pistols jam-packed with ammunition, three short guns manufactured locally, thirteen motorcycles, camouflage outfits, six walkie-talkies, one Toyota Corolla, and one tricycle.

A spokesman for the command stated that during the previous three months, the command has stepped up its operations to suppress bandits in the Sankera axis of the state.

She continued by saying that a number of operations conducted in the axis had resulted in the capture of individuals who had been charged in court, while other suspects had been neutralised during the exchange of confiscated weapons and ammunition and the dismantling of several camps.

According to Anene, the state's commissioner of police, Hassan Yabanet, praised the officers' bravery and ordered the residents of Sankera to provide the police with any relevant information regarding individuals who may be at large and may have sustained bullet wounds.

The state's hotspot for crime is the Sankera axis, which includes the local government districts of Logo, Katsina-Ala, and Ukum.
