OpenAI, Meta in talks with Reliance for AI expansion in India

According to technology news website The Information, tech giants OpenAI and Meta Platforms have separately discussed potential partnerships with India's Reliance Industries to expand their artificial intelligence presence in the country.

According to the report, one proposal under consideration is a partnership between Reliance Jio and OpenAI to distribute ChatGPT, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Furthermore, OpenAI is reportedly looking into the possibility of lowering ChatGPT's monthly subscription fee from $20 to a few dollars. However, it is unclear whether this pricing strategy was discussed with Reliance.

The report also stated that Reliance has considered offering OpenAI's AI models to its enterprise clients via an application programming interface. The conglomerate, led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, is also thinking about hosting and running OpenAI models locally—a strategy that would keep Indian customer data within the country.

Further discussions include Reliance's plans to run Meta and OpenAI AI models in a massive three-gigawatt data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Reliance describes the upcoming facility as the world's largest data centre.

Reliance Industries is one of India's largest conglomerates, with businesses in petrochemicals, refining, oil and gas exploration, telecommunications, retail, and renewable energy.
