Ohanaeze Ndigbo denounces the Plateau killings, advocates for restructuring and the establishment of
The premier Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, strongly condemns the horrific killing of more than 150 individuals in Plateau State by gunmen.
A statement issued by Dr. Chiedozie Ogbonnia, the National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, characterized the killings as savage, heartless, and barbaric.
Ogbonnia expressed that Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide received the distressing news with shock about the brutal massacre of over 150 individuals in communities within the Barkin Ladi, Mangu, and Bokkos local government areas of Plateau State by gunmen on Tuesday, December 24, 2023.
"The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, was at his village, Attah, Ikeduru local government of Imo State, for his Christmas holidays when he received this distressing news," Ogbonnia added.
“The Igbo Leader categorizes the killing of over 150 individuals, the destruction of homes, random shootings, and the displacement of residents as a deliberate act of genocide. He questions why, in this era of modernity and civilization, Nigeria is still witnessing the savage, heartless, and barbaric news of such massive killings.”
Expressing regret, the Igbo Leader laments that the federal government has yet to heed Ohanaeze Ndigbo's call for restructuring and the implementation of a state policing system to address the recurring loss of lives and property across the country.
Iwuanyanwu emphasizes that the current federal security architecture proves inadequate for the diverse demography of the nation.
“Iwuanyanwu emphasizes that such atrocious and cowardly killings persist because, historically, the perpetrators of such savage acts often go unpunished. He urges President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take all necessary actions to bring to justice those responsible for the heinous crime in Plateau State,” Ogbonnia stated.
“The Igbo Leader uses this platform to instruct the Igbo leadership in Plateau State to extend all forms of support to the immediate families of the deceased, the displaced, and the various victims of this tragedy.
“Iwuanyanwu, on behalf of all the sons and daughters of Igbo, extends condolences to the governor of Plateau State, His Excellency, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, the people of Plateau State, and the Middle Belt Forum led by Dr. Bitrus Pogu.
“The Igbo Leader prays to the Almighty to grant the souls of the deceased a peaceful rest in His embrace.”
