Nigeria’s data consumption hits record 1.04m terabytes in May
Data usage in Nigeria reached an unprecedented level of 1.04 million terabytes in May 2025, as reported by the Nigerian Communications Commission. This increase coincides with a decline in the number of internet subscribers.
The figure represents the highest monthly data consumption recorded since the NCC began releasing such statistics in January 2023.
It indicates a substantial rise from April’s total of 983,283 terabytes and exceeds the former maximum of 1 million terabytes achieved in January 2025.
In spite of this uptick in usage, the number of active internet subscriptions dropped to 141.5 million in May from 141.9 million in April.
This drop follows a recent 50% increase in data prices by telecom companies, which seems to be driving some users offline.
Mobile network operators—MTN, Airtel, Globacom, and 9mobile—were primarily responsible for the decline, with their total internet subscriptions decreasing to 141 million in May from 141.4 million the previous month.
The overall active mobile subscriptions also fell slightly to 172.4 million compared to April’s 172.6 million, reflecting the broader effects of rising telecom costs on consumer behavior.
Nevertheless, the record data consumption suggests that the remaining users are utilizing significantly more data, fueled by a growing dependence on streaming, remote work, and digital services.
