Nepal’s new PM resumes office amid economic challenges

Nepal’s newly appointed interim Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, a 73-year-old former chief justice, has announced her cabinet with the goal of restoring stability following the ousting of the previous government due to deadly anti-corruption demonstrations.

The swearing-in ceremony occurred beneath an outdoor canopy, where President Ram Chandra Paudel took the oath of office for three principal ministers.

The protests, which commenced on September 8, were triggered by a ban on social media and intensified by persistent economic difficulties. The turmoil rapidly worsened, leading to the destruction of the parliament and critical government facilities.

As per official reports, at least 72 individuals have lost their lives, and 191 others continue to receive treatment in hospitals.

Prime Minister Karki’s mission is to fulfill the protesters' demands for a future free from corruption ahead of the elections scheduled for March. Her cabinet features Om Prakash Aryal as the Home Minister, Kulman Ghising as the Minister of Energy, Infrastructure, Transport, and Urban Development, and Rameshwor Khanal as the Finance Minister.

Aryal is recognized for his efforts in addressing corruption, governance, and human rights issues, whereas Ghising is lauded for resolving Nepal’s load-shedding crisis. Khanal, a well-regarded economist and former finance secretary, must confront the unemployment problems that sparked the uprising.
