Nasarawa ends joint account with LG

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has abolished the joint account system between the state government and the 13 local governments.

Mr. Peter Ahemba, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Affairs, disclosed this in Lafia on Tuesday.

This is consistent with the Supreme Court's decision granting financial autonomy to local governments across Nigeria.

Ahemba emphasized that the move demonstrates the governor's commitment to upholding the law and will allow local governments to make significant strides in their development efforts.

"The governor is one of the most accountable and transparent leaders in the country, believing in the rule of law and having no hidden agenda. This suggests a move to close the previously existing joint account," he stated.

Ahemba also confirmed that the state government would implement the N70,000 minimum wage, as required by federal law.

"You will recall that the governor was willing to implement the new minimum wage in August and pay three-month arrears." However, organised labour preferred that their promotions be implemented first, and the governor agreed.

"The government is ready to begin discussions on the new minimum wage now that the promotions have been successfully implemented," the minister said.

The media aide reassured residents that the state government would continue to prioritize their well-being by focusing on providing high-quality infrastructure.

He also stated that the government is committed to making significant investments in agriculture to combat hunger and poverty in Nasarawa State.
