Minister steps into IG, PSC row over constable recruitment

Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, Minister of Police Affairs, has intervened in the ongoing dispute between the Police Service Commission and the Nigeria Police Force.

On June 4, the PSC issued the list of 10,000 successful applicants for constable and specialist cadre positions in the Nigeria Police Force.

Eleven days later, the police rejected the list, claiming that the recruitment process was tainted by corruption and irregularities.

According to the force spokeswoman, Muyiwa Adejobi, "Several names of persons purported to be names of successful candidates are those who did not even apply and therefore did not take part in the recruitment exercise."

Following the police action, the commission's union demanded the expulsion of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for distorting facts about the recruitment process.

In its first reaction, the PSC urged the police to present proof to back up its accusation that the recruitment exercise was corrupt.

On June 25, Ikechukwu Ani, PSC Head of Press and Public Relations, stated that the final list of successful candidates from the recruitment would never be annulled, emphasising that the exercise was carried out in conformity with applicable regulations.

Bolaji Kazeem, spokesperson for the Ministry of Police Affairs, told our correspondent on Friday that the minister was striving to reconcile the two institutions.

He further stated that the minister will ensure that the situation does not escalate out of control.
