Man hacks wife to death over alleged extramarital affair
Residents of Idekan Farm Settlement in Ogun State's Ijebu-Ode area were startled when a man named Matthew James killed his 55-year-old wife, Etim Mary, on suspicion of having an extramarital affair.NigeriaWatch learned that the incident occurred at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Our correspondent learned from multiple community and police sources that the defendant, who is currently in police custody, committed the crime after fearing his late wife was having an adulterous affair with another guy in the neighbourhood.
An eyewitness, who sought anonymity owing to the sensitivity of the situation, said police officers from the Ijebu-Igbo Division apprehended the culprit.
The eyewitness also told our correspondent that the suspect said he and the deceased woman had a "blood covenant" not to betray each other.
According to the story, "They made a blood pledge not to leave each other. He suspected the wife of having an extramarital affair. The woman was married before meeting James. He married her after she had reached an advanced age. She grew up with children before James married her.
"James claims they both made a blood pact never to leave each other for whatever reason. He simply returned one morning with a machete and chopped the woman to death. He did not flee after committing the crime. He simply stood beside her afterwards."
Odutola, speaking on Monday's horrifying tragedy, revealed that the wife was pronounced dead by the attending doctor after being brought to the hospital by other residents.
She stated, "She was discovered laying in a pool of her blood directly in front of the house around 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. She had severe injuries on her forehead, shoulders, and other areas of her body. The husband was discovered with the blood-soaked machete he was thought to have used to perform the crime.
The body was transferred to a general hospital in Ijebu-Igbo, where a doctor on duty certified her death. Her body has been deposited at the Alayangbe Private Mortuary in Oke-Agbo, Ijebu-Igbo, for autopsy.
"We will move the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Abeokuta as soon as the preliminary investigation is concluded."
