Lawmaker discusses exclusion of private school students from student loans

Isiaka Gboyega, a House of Representatives member, states that private university and tertiary education students were omitted from the student loan scheme due to the high fees associated with these institutions. As the Chairman of the House Committee on Tertiary Education and Student Loans, Mr. Gboyega emphasized that the fees of a single private school student could cover the expenses of multiple public school students. It's noteworthy that President Bola Tinubu signed the student loan bill on Wednesday, which does not encompass private school students.

"An applicant for a loan under this Act must be a citizen of Nigeria and have secured admission into any university, polytechnic, college of education established by the Federal Government or State Government, or a vocational or skills acquisition school licensed by the Federal Government," section 23 of the Act states.

Commenting on the exclusion of private schools, Mr. Gboyega remarked, "For individuals capable of affording education in certain private schools, the necessity for a loan under this scheme may be minimal."

He elaborated that in the future, the fund may be expanded to encompass students attending private schools.
