Lagos cautions residents about 'toxic' plantain chips

The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency has issued a warning to consumers of fried plantains, commonly known as "plantain chips," to be vigilant about any questionable practices in the processing of these snacks.

The caution comes in response to a circulating social media report in which the author claimed to have observed a woman melting polythene, also referred to as rubber or nylon, into the hot oil used for frying plantains to toughen the chips.

In a statement released on the official Lagos State Government handle on Tuesday, LASCOPA has advised consumers to exercise care when purchasing plantain chips to prevent potential health risks.

The statement emphasized, "In light of a viral online image posted by an eyewitness, showing a 'plantain chips' vendor allegedly incorporating polythene, known as 'rubber,' into the hot vegetable oil used for frying the plantains, the Agency deems it necessary to offer this advice."

LASCOPA expresses profound concern regarding the potential health consequences that may arise for consumers.

Given this disconcerting revelation, the agency strongly recommends that all consumers exercise caution and remain vigilant in choosing where they buy their plantain chips. This is to avoid unwittingly subjecting themselves to harmful substances or preventable instances of food poisoning."

"The Agency is currently conducting an investigation into this revelation and will take necessary measures to safeguard consumers. Those found responsible for the perilous practice will be held accountable."

Meanwhile, the public is urged to play a role in alerting relevant government agencies, including LASCOPA, to any unfriendly or unlawful practices observed among sellers of consumable items that pose a threat to consumer health.

LASCOPA is situated at No 2B, Soji Adepegba Close, off Allen Avenue, Ikeja, with annex offices located within Badagry Local Government Secretariat, Bariga LCDA, Ikorodu Local Government, and Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA.

For communication, the Agency can be reached via email at lascopa@lagosstate.gov.ng or lasgcopa@gmail.com, and through the following phone numbers: 08124993885, 09064323154, and 08092509777.
