Labour rules out strike on Tuesday, awaits Tinubu’s nod

Minimum wage: Labour rules out strike action on Tuesday; awaiting Tinubu's approval. The Nigeria Labour Congress has ruled out a strike planned for tomorrow, Tuesday, to demand a new national minimum wage. The NLC President, Joe Ajaero, announced this on Monday during the ongoing International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. According to the Guardian, Ajaero stated that organised labour cannot go on strike tomorrow since the data supplied by the Tritiparte committee on minimum wage are with President Bola Tinubu.

The government and organized employers' body suggested N62,000, but labor proposed N250,000, which does not imply that N62,000 is the new minimum wage. He stated, "The tripartite committee gave two statistics to the President. Government and companies requested N62,000, while labor proposed N250.00. We're waiting for the President's decision. Our National Executive Council (NEC) will discuss the new statistic whenever it is released. "We cannot declare a strike right now since the figures favor the President. We shall await the President's decision.

During the immediate previous President's tenure, the tripartite committee offered N27,000, which he enhanced to N30,000. We hope that this President will do the right thing. The President stated that there is a significant difference between N62,000 and N250,000. The NLC president criticized state governors from the Nigerian Governors' Forum for rejecting the proposed N62,000 minimum wage. He said, "How can a governor claim he cannot pay? They cannot simultaneously advocate for the decentralization of the minimum wage.

Are the wages decentralized? Governors whose states do not contribute a dime to the national budget and generate pitiful Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) earn the same as governors whose states generate billions of dollars for the FAAC. "They should start by decentralizing their wages and emoluments. "So, where does Godwin Obaseki, the governor of Edo state, receive his money? He is paying the N70,000 minimum wage. This is the type of governor that should be imitated, not the ineffective ones."
