A momentous occasion unfolded in Uganda as 70-year-old Safina Namukwaya successfully gave birth to twins—a boy and a girl. This remarkable achievement, made possible through in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment, marked a historic milestone at the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre in Kampala, the capital of Uganda.

The hospital shared the joyous news on its Facebook page, expressing admiration for Namukwaya's courage and resilience. The post featured a video clip of Namukwaya speaking just before the caesarean delivery, highlighting the strength of the human spirit in the face of medical success.

Namukwaya, in an interview with a privately owned NTV channel, revealed that this was her second delivery, coming three years after giving birth to a girl in 2020. Her pregnancy journey was not without challenges, including abandonment by the children's father, who reportedly did not support her throughout the process.

Expressing concern about raising the children on her own, Namukwaya shared her happiness at having them after enduring years of stigma and ridicule for being childless. She recounted instances of mockery, revealing, “One time, a very young boy heckled me saying I had been cursed by my mother to die without a child.”

The hospital proudly announced that Namukwaya became the oldest woman in Africa to give birth, underscoring the significance of the medical procedure known as IVF, which assists individuals facing fertility challenges in conceiving children. IVF involves extracting an egg from the woman's ovaries, combining it with sperm in a controlled laboratory setting, and then reintroducing the resulting embryo into the woman's uterus for maturation and development.
