Hit-and-run smuggler kills Customs officer in Jigawa
The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit, Zone B, reported on Saturday the death of one of its personnel, Inspector of Customs Hamza Abdullahi-Elenwo.According to a statement issued in Kaduna by Zone B Public Relations Officer Isa Suleiman, the event occurred on Friday, July 12, 2024, near Achilafia on the Daura-Kano Road in Jigawa State during a stop-and-search operation.
According to the Customs spokeswoman, the incident occurred when the car suspected of being smuggled into the nation collided with the operative while attempting to elude arrest.
He claimed that the slain officer was brought to General Hospital Kazaure before being moved to the Federal Medical Centre in Katsina, where he was confirmed dead by the on-duty doctor.
He stated that the deceased was buried according to Islamic customs.
Suleiman stated, "The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit, Zone B is saddened to announce the tragic death of Inspector of Customs (IC) Hamza Abdullahi Elenwo in an unfortunate incident that occurred on Friday, July 12, 2024 at Achilafia along Daura-Kano Road in Jigawa State during a stop and search operation.
"The incident occurred when a car suspected of being smuggled into the nation collided with the operative while attempting to avoid detention. The late operative was brought to the General Hospital Kazaure and then transferred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Katsina, where he was pronounced dead by the doctor on duty. The deceased was laid to rest in Katsina in accordance with Islamic customs.
According to the Customs spokesman, Comptroller Ahmadu Shuaibu, Head of Federal Operations Unit Zone B, expressed condolences to the deceased's family and prayed for his eternal peace on behalf of the unit's officers and men.
"Comptroller Shuaibu stated that the incident demonstrates the amount of desperation by smugglers who operate without regard for human life, and that it is also one of many incidents in which smugglers kill and maim service personnel in an attempt to elude arrest.
"The Comptroller vowed to ensure justice is served as one auspect has been arrested and is in the custody of the Nigeria Police Force, Gwiwa Division in Jigawa State," he continued.
He stated that the unit's operatives would not be disheartened and would remain steadfast in their fight against smuggling.
Our source tells that Inspector Hamza, a native of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was born on April 16, 1985.
He entered the Nigeria Customs Service as a Customs Assistant III (CAIII) in the Transport and Logistics Unit on October 17, 2013, and was promoted to the rank of Inspector of Customs (IC) in 2022.
He is survived by his wife and two children.

According to the service's National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada, the incident took place at the Gamji Makaho checkpoint in Katsina State's Dankama district.
He explained that difficulties began when a squad of officials from Katsina Area Command sought to intercept a convoy of over 50 trucks suspected of unlawfully transferring items out of the country.
