Gombe Suspends Monthly Sanitation for Local Government Elections
The Gombe State Government announced on Friday that the monthly sanitation, typically held on the last Saturday of every month, has been canceled due to the local government election taking place tomorrow.
In a statement in Gombe, the state capital, the Commissioner for Water, Environment, and Forest Resources, Mohammed Fawu, urged residents to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings, emphasizing that they shouldn't rely solely on the designated time for monthly sanitation to keep their environment clean.
Fawu stated, “We would like to inform the public that the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, usually scheduled for the last Saturday of each month, has been suspended for April 2024.
“This is due to the upcoming local government elections in Gombe State on April 27, 2024. The suspension of this month’s sanitation exercise is intended to facilitate a smooth and disruption-free election process this Saturday.”
Fawu mentioned that the suspension was in the best interest of the residents to ensure they could participate in electing local government area officials. He added, “The general public is encouraged to take advantage of the suspension to come out en masse and vote in the local government council elections on Saturday, April 27th.”
Auwal Baba-Jada, the Executive Secretary of the Gombe State Environmental Protection Agency, also spoke on the agency's ongoing efforts to address waste management. He said they plan to establish approximately 90 additional refuse collection points.
"We have 90 more to construct, not just in Tumfure but also along Liji and Akko bypass, to serve as refuse collection points," Baba-Jada stated.
