Flood Warning: Edo State Government Advises Residents to Move to Higher Grounds

The Edo State Government has urged residents in lowland and riverine regions of the state to remain vigilant and consider moving to elevated areas due to the potential risk of flooding. This warning comes in light of the Cameroonian authorities releasing controlled amounts of water from the Lagdo Dam into the River Niger.

The affected communities encompass Agenebode in Etsako East Local Government Area (LGA), Anegbete in Etsako Central LGA, Illushi in Esan South East LGA, and various other riverine regions in Ikpoba Okha LGA, Ovia North-East LGA, and Ovia South-West LGA.

According to a statement released in Benin, Chris Nehikhare, the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, conveyed, "The Edo State Government has been informed that the authorities of the LAGDO DAM in the Republic of Cameroon will release controlled amounts of water into the River Benue due to flooding brought about by persistent heavy rainfall."

"Residents residing in lowlands and riverine regions, including Agenebode, Anegbete, and Ilushi in Etsako East, Etsako Central, and Esan South East local government areas, respectively, are hereby advised to remain vigilant and consider relocating to higher ground.

"In addition, individuals in Ikpoba Okha, Ovia North-East, and Ovia South-West areas are advised to be alert.

"The Edo State Government is committed to offering assistance to those displaced from their residences due to the rising water levels caused by the overflow of the River Benue.

"Anticipating this situation, we have taken prompt measures to ensure that our Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps are prepared and that residents are adequately informed and educated."
