Fatal Crashes Claim Lives of 11 Individuals on Osun and Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
A tragic road accident claimed the lives of at least nine passengers on Monday along the Ikirun/Offa Expressway in Inisa. The incident occurred when the truck they were traveling in, loaded with bags of beans and passengers from Niger State en route to Edo State, lost control and veered into the bush.
Regrettably, all the victims lost their lives at the scene of the accident. The Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Osun Command, Kehinde Adeleke, reported that the crash happened in the early hours of Monday at the Yidi Junction in Inisa.
She stated, "On Monday, December 25, 2023, a Mitsubishi Canter with the license plate MNA606SB NIGER, transporting bags of beans from Niger State to Benin, Edo State, was engaged in an early morning accident. Unfortunately, nine out of the 12 individuals on board lost their lives.
"FRSC officers promptly attended to the incident, transferring the three injured passengers to Orotunde Hospital Ikirun. The deceased have been respectfully placed in the hospital's morgue.
"The bags of beans and the involved vehicle have been cleared and taken to the Inisa Police Divisional Headquarters.
In a separate incident, two individuals lost their lives on Christmas Day in a crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The collision occurred past the Sagamu Interchange, just before the Redemption Camp in Mowe, Ogun State, involving an 18-seater Hiace bus on its journey from the interchange to Mowe.
The Federal Road Safety Corps officially verified the incident in response to inquiries made on Monday.
Florence Okpe, the FRSC spokesperson in Ogun State, confirmed that the corps had removed the bodies from the scene. She attributed the accident to improper overtaking by another vehicle in the path of the bus driver.
Okpe provided details, stating, "The tragic crash took place around 17:20 hrs on Christmas Day, involving a total of 15 individuals – 12 male adults and three female adults. One person sustained injuries, and unfortunately, two male adults lost their lives.
The collision implicated two vehicles, specifically a Toyota bus bearing registration TSE266XA and a Mazda bus identified as FKJ215XX.
"The likely factors contributing to the accident were improper overtaking and excessive speeding.
"The injured individual received medical attention at Idera Hospital, while the deceased were placed in the same hospital's morgue."
In the aftermath, Anthony Uga, the FRSC Sector Commander in Ogun, urged motorists to abstain from speeding and emphasized the importance of undivided attention while driving.
Uga extended sympathies to the victims' families and recommended reaching out to the FRSC in Sagamu for additional details on the crash.
