FG unveils strategic initiatives to boost cybersecurity infrastructure

The Federal Government has revealed its intentions to bolster Nigeria's cybersecurity framework in light of rising digital threats, introducing a series of strategic measures aimed at improving resilience throughout the nation's digital ecosystem.

National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, made this announcement at the first National Cybersecurity Conference in Abuja.

He emphasized that cybersecurity has become an essential component of national security and a crucial factor for economic stability.

Ribadu indicated that the government intends to create a National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre to facilitate real-time responses to cyber threats.

He also highlighted the Executive Order on the Protection of Critical National Information Infrastructure and the ongoing revision of the Cybercrime Act as fundamental elements of Nigeria's advancing cybersecurity strategy.

“Our digital transformation brings with it economic opportunities, but it also entails greater exposure to threats. Building resilience is no longer a choice; it is the cornerstone of our national security,” Ribadu stated.

Ribadu noted that the National Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy is under revision to address new threats posed by emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence.

In his comments, Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, pointed out the growing vulnerabilities within Nigeria's fintech industry.

Olukoyede recognized significant threats such as banking malware, cryptocurrency scams, fraudulent fintech platforms, and social engineering tactics, stressing the urgent need to stay proactive against these swiftly changing methods.

He revealed that the EFCC is ramping up its use of digital forensics and enhancing inter-agency intelligence collaboration to tackle financially motivated cyber crimes.

He also announced plans to create a Cybersecurity Research Centre by 2026, with the goal of redirecting the skills of cybercriminals—often referred to as “Yahoo Yahoo boys”—toward more positive and legitimate pursuits.

“Let’s not wait for a substantial cyber attack to take action. Resilience is our strongest defense. The EFCC is dedicated to tracking and prosecuting digital offenses throughout Nigeria's financial system,” he stated.
