FG unveils green money project to empower youth in agriculture
The Federal Government has launched the Green Money Project, a presidential initiative designed to empower young Nigerians through advanced farming practices.Abiodun Yinusa, Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Agriculture, launched the project on Wednesday at an event held at the Federal University of Agriculture in Abeokuta.
Yinusa added that the project aims to unleash Nigeria's agricultural potential by empowering young people and capitalising on the country's enormous resources, as well as other unexplored prospects in the sector.
He said the plan is consistent with Tinubu's proclamation of a state of emergency for food security.
"It complements the ongoing efforts of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and encourages collaboration among key stakeholders to involve youth more actively in agriculture," according to him.
Yinusa highlighted Nigeria's significant concerns, including unemployment, poverty, food insecurity, and young Nigerians' underutilisation of the agricultural sector.
He emphasised the Tinubu administration's commitment to empowering and pushing young people to take the lead in reforming agriculture.
"In keeping with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda and the national emergency on food security, this program aims to empower young Nigerians through agricultural growth.
"The plan will attract, train, and support young people by providing them with knowledge of current agricultural methods, mechanisation, climate-smart farming techniques, and digital technology.
"It will be implemented across selected universities, youth development centres, and technical colleges nationwide, contributing to the goal of achieving zero hunger in Nigeria," stated the minister.
Mr Charles Folayan, the Project Coordinator, indicated that the Green Money Project prioritises data development, capacity building, resource support, mentorship, and improved market access.
In his presentation, FUNAAB Vice Chancellor Prof. Olushola Kehinde congratulated the Presidency for selecting the institution as a vital partner in the effort.
He described the effort as a timely and effective intervention, and expressed confidence that the collaboration will significantly improve the university's ability for food production and value chain growth.
The Green Money Project is a comprehensive approach to engage Nigerian youth in agriculture, with the goal of improving smallholder farmers' livelihoods and supporting long-term growth in the sector.
