FG to enhance power grid by 4,000MW – Adelabu

Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power, indicated that the Federal Government's continued participation will increase Nigeria's grid capacity by 4,000 megawatts by the end of 2026.

This was announced in a statement by Bolaji Tunji, the minister's Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations.

According to a statement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new strategic direction.

Adelabu indicated that respected engineering, procurement, and construction firms have been recruited to expedite the implementation of essential infrastructure projects required to meet this goal.

He stated that the president has allowed the distribution scope to be carried out by other recognised Engineering, Procurement, and Construction businesses with the necessary technical, financial, and financing skills.

"The strategic decisions seek to boost grid capacity by 4,000MW by the end of 2026, with an aspirational target of 2,000MW set by the Economic Management Team in 2024.

"Noteworthy is the fact that the implementation of the PPI commenced with the installation and inauguration of 10 power transformers and 10 mobile substations across the country under the Pilot Phase of the PPI, which was manufactured and delivered in October 2023," he told journalists.

Adelabu emphasised that the current administration's commitment has not only revived the Siemens Power Project, also known as the Presidential Power Initiative, but has also prepared the path for increased power delivery to crucial areas of Nigeria's economy.

"The inception of the present administration in 2023 brought about renewed vigour to the Siemens Power Project as an accelerated contract was signed to ensure visible progress in the project," Adelabu told journalists.

He emphasised that "no significant progress was made on the project until the current administration took office," and that the accomplishments since May 29, 2023 demonstrate a focused and committed government agenda.

"There is no doubt that the Siemens project has witnessed significant improvements since the inauguration of this administration," Tunji told reporters.

The statement acknowledged that the present administration has made significant progress in the power industry.

A notable milestone was the successful installation and commissioning of ten power transformers and ten mobile substations across the country, which marked the end of the PPI's pilot phase in October 2023.
