FG launches $500m power transmission infrastructure for Lagos-Ogun industrial corridor
The federal government has announced a $500 million Japanese International Corporation Agency intervention project to improve electricity transmission infrastructure along the Lagos-Ogun industrial corridor.According to The Punch, the Special Adviser on Strategic Communication and Media Relations to Minister of Power, Bolaji Tunji, made this disclosure in a statement on Friday.
The Lagos-Ogun industrial corridor is a major industrial hub in southwest Nigeria, with a large concentration of manufacturing enterprises and economic activity. However, it has challenges such as poor infrastructure and insufficient power supply, which the $500 million JICA effort aims to address.
Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, made the announcement while hosting Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun in Abuja.
The JICA project aims to strengthen electricity transmission infrastructure both inside and outside the Ogun industrial corridors, specifically in the Agbara, Mowe, and Shagamu industrial clusters.
This will entail constructing new power transmission substations and improving existing ones, as well as reconducting existing weak high voltage power lines and adding new extensions for capacity enhancement and expansion', Adelabu stated.
He continued, "We also have the Presidential Power Initiative projects, the highlights of which include improving power transmission infrastructure within and outside the Ogun industrial corridors. Some Transmission Company of Nigeria projects to improve power supply in Ogun State are also underway."
Adelabu encouraged the governor to collaborate with the ministry of electricity in convincing gas pipeline owners to upgrade the pipeline infrastructure that runs across the state in order to increase the quantity and quality of gas deliveries to industry and power plants.
The governor praised the minister for the improvements in electricity supply and urged him to keep up the momentum.
"As part of my tour, I'd like to make a special appeal to you for special attention to improving electricity infrastructure and supplies in Ogun State, which is a significant industrial hub for the country.
"I am aware that since taking office, you have visited several major industries and power plants in the state, including Momas Electricity Meters Manufacturing Company, Coleman Wires and Cables, and Splendour Electric, a producer of Porcelin high voltage electric insulators, as well as the Olorunsogo NDPHC NIPP power plant in Papa Lanto." However, we have much more to show you," Abiodun explained.
