Ex-Accountant General begs for time to refund looted funds
The Anambra State Police Command announced that it has identified the policemen allegedly implicated in a viral video of phone theft at a hamlet in the state's Otuocha Local Government Area.In a video that appeared on social media on Wednesday, a resident of the neighborhood described how police officers from the Otuocha Police Division stormed their homes and forcibly removed mobile phones that people were charging.
The caller, who described himself as a community resident, claimed that heavily armed police personnel stormed the places in a commando-like manner, unplugging the telephones from their sockets one by one, and carting them away for no apparent reason.
According to the speaker in the three-minute video, police officials raided their neighborhood late on Tuesday and hauled away an unspecified number of phones.
As a result, he requested the state's police authorities to investigate the case and restored the phones to their rightful owners.
In the video, residents block a key express road in the village to protest police officers' actions.
Residents have expressed a variety of emotions to the event, with some demanding for an investigation into the police officers' actions.
However, in a statement released on Thursday, Anambra State Police spokesman SP Tochukwu Ikenga stated that the command has identified the officers engaged in the incident.
Ikenga urged the victims whose phones had been forcibly removed to come forward to assist in the inquiry.
He stated, "The Anambra State Police Command has intercepted a video of a protest against police action and wishes to confirm that the police team and officers named in the video have been identified.
"The Command also invites the victims to come forward to help facilitate the necessary action in the investigation."
"To this end, the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, calls for calm and urges citizens to use the channels of complaint against police officers rather than being unruly, as seen in the video, and blocking the express road, thereby infringing on the fundamental rights of others, which is precisely what citizens want to protect.
"We desire police officers who are civil and professional in carrying out their jobs. Residents who are dissatisfied with their situation should file a complaint with the police.
"These channels include the CP Monitoring Unit of Command CMU, the Police X-Squad under the State Criminal Investigation Department Police Complaints Bureau, and the recently revived Complaint Response Unit under the Police Public Relations Department Awka.
"If you are in distress, please phone the Command Control Room at 07039194332 or the Police Public Relations Officer at 08039334002. Download the 'NPF Rescue Me App', which is available for Android and Apple iOS phones, to create reports. Please provide further details."
