Enugu to empower 1,000 youths with green cooking stove skills
The Enugu State Government has revealed its goal to train and empower 1,000 young individuals in the creation of innovative green energy and safe cooking stoves. This stove, referred to as the Enugu Stove, is reported to be fully constructed with local materials and utilizes smokeless and odourless coal briquettes to generate consistent heat for cooking.
Lawrence Eze, the state’s Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, made this announcement in Enugu on Thursday.
Mr. Eze stated that the training would be conducted in partnership with the Scientific Equipment Development Institute to ensure adherence to the original design and quality of the green energy stove.
The commissioner indicated that the training is planned for 2026, following the initial production of 150,000 units of the stove, with the participants receiving start-up kits upon completion.
He mentioned that his ministry plans to establish a special purpose vehicle or a commercial branch to manage the collaboration with SEDI and the four factories producing coal briquettes in each senatorial district. According to him, the introduction of the innovative green energy and safe stove will transform the ministry into a revenue-generating entity, a legacy he aspires to leave behind.
He commented, “The stove and other commendable initiatives by His Excellency, Dr. Peter Mbah, are intended to enhance the economic and living standards of our people, aiming to increase the state’s GDP from $4.4 billion to $30 billion. We are branding it ‘Made in Enugu’ to promote the Enugu brand, similar to Enugu Air, Enugu Rice, and other forthcoming Enugu products. This branding will highlight the quality and distinctiveness of our state’s products and programs, setting them apart from others found across the country, in Africa, and worldwide. The Enugu Stove is an innovative green energy and safe cooking appliance designed to protect Nigeria and Africa from deforestation and ecological damage caused by cutting down trees for firewood and air contamination from charcoal production.”
Mr. Eze remarked that this stove would alleviate the inconvenience of cooking being interrupted by running out of gas or kerosene.
The commissioner noted that with the introduction of the stove, the state government would ramp up its efforts to combat tree cutting and charcoal production within the state.
He added, “In a few years, given the greater safety, economic, and environmental advantages of the stove, it is anticipated that the majority of residents in the country will abandon other cooking alternatives.”
