EFCC to grill Tompolo over naira abuse at birthday party

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has announced that it will question former Niger Delta militant leader Chief Government Ekpemupolo—also known as Tompolo—about alleged naira abuse during his recent 54th birthday celebration.

The agency made the announcement on Monday via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, writing, "Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer." The post included an image allegedly depicting naira notes being sprayed during the party.

The move follows a viral video on Sunday of a man spraying ₦1,000 notes while Tompolo danced. The video, originally shared by X user @harreceipts, reignited public outrage over the misuse of Nigerian currency at social gatherings, prompting direct calls for EFCC action.

Social media users quickly accused the commission of using double standards. One user, @NejeebBello, questioned the EFCC's silence on similar cases involving wealthy elites. "What about the Eleganza sons who filmed themselves abusing the naira?" he enquired.

Another user, @OurFavOnlineDoc, shared the Tompolo video, writing, "This is clearly a breach. Allow the world to see how justice is selectively applied.

The controversy comes after a series of high-profile naira abuse cases. The EFCC recently summoned businessman Emeka Okonkwo (E-Money), as well as celebrities Iyabo Ojo and Ayo Makun, in connection with similar allegations.

Spraying or mishandling naira is a criminal offence under the EFCC Act and the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, with violators facing fines or imprisonment.

The EFCC says it will continue to crack down on currency abuse, regardless of the individuals involved.
