Dangote refinery: Reps move to break NNPCL’s fuel lifting monopoly

The House of Representatives has referred a motion calling on other petroleum marketers to directly transport premium motor spirit from the Dangote Refinery to a joint national assembly ad hoc committee.

This move aims to investigate the implications of improving market access for petroleum marketers and increasing competition in the sector.

Honourable Oboku Oforji proposed the motion, arguing that the Dangote Refinery's commissioning signals Nigeria's potential for self-sufficiency in PMS production, according to Channels News.

Oforji chastised the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for insisting on being the sole lifter of PMS from the refinery, calling their stance "greed" in light of NNPCL's inability to maintain the country's existing refineries.

Honourable Oforji also urged the House to require NNPCL to disclose the price at which it sells crude to the Dangote Refinery, as well as for the refinery to reveal its PMS sales price to NNPCL.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited recently announced that it has officially begun lifting refined petrol from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.
