The Civil Society Consortium on Judicial Accountability (CSCJA) is calling for the immediate resignation of Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, citing alleged abuse of office and favoritism in his duties.
The group, comprising lawyers of public interest, expressed outrage at the CJN's appointment of his biological children to judicial positions in recent appointments.
During a protest near the Supreme Court on Tuesday, the group accused the CJN of appointing his son, Olukayode Ariwoola Junior, as a Judge of the Federal High Court, and his daughter, Oluwakemi Victoria Ariwoola, as a Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The Civil Society Consortium on Judicial Accountability (CSCJA) accused the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, of granting undue privileges to his family members. They alleged that the CJN utilized his position as chairman of the National Judicial Council (NJC) to recommend his children for judicial appointments, bypassing merit-based considerations.
During a protest near the Supreme Court, group members displayed placards with messages denouncing nepotism and demanding the CJN's resignation. Speaking to journalists, the consortium's coordinator, Mr. Martin Obono, emphasized the need for ethical governance in the judiciary and raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest.
The protesters called for an independent inquiry into the alleged nepotism and urged the CJN to recuse himself from his position pending investigation. They demanded swift disciplinary action if the CJN was found to have violated ethical standards.
Attempts to reach the Director of Information of the NJC for comment were unsuccessful as he was reportedly on annual leave and out of Abuja.
