Bridge Collapse in Shendam, Plateau, Following Heavy Rainfall, Leaves 53-Year-Old Structure in Ruins
After a substantial downpour on Sunday, a bridge connecting various towns and villages within Shendam Local Government Area of Plateau State succumbed to the forces of nature and collapsed.
It was reported that the bridge gave way at approximately 1 pm on Sunday while vehicles were traversing it.
A local resident of Shendam, Aliyu Baga, verified the incident to the Daily Trust, acknowledging that the bridge's collapse had exacerbated the challenges faced by the local community. Fortunately, no casualties were reported as a result of the incident.
He indicated that the bridge had been built approximately in 1970.
"The residents of the local government area are now compelled to search for alternative routes to access the town and neighboring local government councils. This incident has undeniably introduced further difficulties. The bridge serves as a vital link to various locations, encompassing hospitals, markets, and more.
"It stands as the sole conduit that facilitates the transportation of agricultural inputs and all essential economic and societal engagements within the LG. We earnestly implore the appropriate authorities to intervene and provide assistance to the residents of this council," he urged.
