Breaking News: Former OPEC President Diezani Alison-Madueke Accused of Bribery by UK Police

On Tuesday, British law enforcement announced that they have formally charged former Nigerian oil minister Diezani Alison-Madueke with bribery-related offenses. It is alleged that she received bribes in exchange for granting lucrative oil and gas contracts worth millions of pounds.

Alison-Madueke, aged 63, held a significant role in the tenure of former President Goodluck Jonathan, serving as the petroleum minister from 2010 to 2015. Additionally, she assumed the presidency of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

"We have reason to believe that Diezani Alison-Madueke misused her authority in Nigeria and received monetary incentives in exchange for granting contracts worth millions of pounds," stated Andy Kelly, who leads the International Corruption Unit of the National Crime Agency (NCA).

"These charges mark a significant point in a comprehensive and intricate global inquiry."

As per the NCA's information, Alison-Madueke is alleged to have gained benefits amounting to no less than £100,000, which included cash, chauffeur-driven vehicles, private jet flights, opulent vacations for her family, and the utilization of numerous properties in London.

The charges leveled against her outline a range of financial incentives, encompassing the provision of furniture, renovation projects, staffing for the properties, funding of private school tuition, and gifts from upscale designer stores like Cartier jewelry and Louis Vuitton merchandise, as indicated by the NCA.

Following her departure from office, she has faced persistent accusations of corruption, although she refutes the allegations.

British authorities indicated that she presently resides in St John's Wood, an affluent district in west London, and is scheduled to appear before Westminster Magistrates' Court on October 2nd.
