Apple loses top AI chief to Meta amid talent war

Ruoming Pang, who was in charge of artificial intelligence models at Apple, is reportedly leaving the company to join rival Meta Platforms, as per a Bloomberg News report on Monday.

Pang, who led the team focused on Apple’s foundational models, is expected to assume a significant role in Meta’s newly established Superintelligence Labs division. This transition is said to come with a compensation package amounting to several million dollars per year.

Neither Apple nor Meta has responded to inquiries from Reuters.

This notable exit highlights the growing competition among tech giants to attract top talent as they strive to lead in the upcoming phase of AI development. In particular, Meta has intensified its hiring efforts, presenting lucrative offers to draw in leading experts in artificial intelligence.

Recently, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg reorganized the company’s AI strategy, streamlining its initiatives under the new Meta Superintelligence Labs. Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of data-labeling company Scale AI, which received investment from Meta last month at a valuation of $29 billion, is leading the division.

Pang’s departure increases the pressure on Apple, which has faced backlash for trailing competitors like Meta, Google, and Microsoft in the generative AI field.
