Adobe unveils Firefly video model, announces subscription

Adobe has released the first public version of its Firefly Video Model, an artificial intelligence-powered video-generation tool, as well as details on its initial pricing.

However, the company stated that pricing for major clients, such as film and television studios, will be determined later in the year.

The Firefly Video Model joins a competitive landscape that includes OpenAI's Sora, startup Runway, and Meta Platforms, which has developed a similar AI-powered video tool but has not yet announced a release date. Adobe's model stands out by seamlessly integrating with Premiere Pro, its flagship video editing software, making it ideal for film and television production workflows.

A key feature of Adobe's offering is the ability to create clips that enhance or repair existing footage from real-world production sets, which is aimed at professional video editors and filmmakers.

Adobe's Firefly Video Model currently produces five-second clips in 1080p resolution. While this is shorter than OpenAI's offering, which can generate clips up to 20 seconds long, Adobe executives pointed out that most clips in professional productions last around three seconds.

Users can create 20 clips per month for $9.99, or 70 clips for $29.99. In comparison, OpenAI charges $20 per month for 50 lower-resolution videos, while a $200 plan includes longer, higher-resolution clips.

Adobe is also creating a "Premium" pricing tier for studios and high-volume users, with pricing information expected later this year. According to Alexandru Costin, Adobe's vice president of generative AI, the company is prioritising high-quality 4K video over simply increasing clip length.
