AFG Aviation leases two aircraft to C’River’s Cally Air

The government-owned airline of Cross River, Cally Air, has broadened its fleet by leasing two aircraft from AFG Aviation, a step intended to enhance regional connectivity and promote tourism.

On Tuesday in Abuja, Governor Bassey Otu, along with senior state officials and aviation suppliers, officially accepted the aircraft during a ceremony. The governor remarked that this development represents a significant achievement in his administration's initiative to reposition Cross River as a key hub for travel and investment within Nigeria's South-South region.

"Cally Air is crucial to our vision of establishing Cross River as a top destination for business and leisure," Otu articulated. "By improving air transport connections, we are unlocking new prospects for tourism, trade, and economic development, while also ensuring our citizens have dependable and cost-effective air travel options."

AFG Aviation referred to the collaboration as a strategic move that would boost the airline’s operational capability and dependability. The newly acquired aircraft are anticipated to operate on both domestic routes and charter services, especially aimed at promoting travel to Calabar, a city long recognized as one of Nigeria’s cultural and tourism hubs.

Launched in 2021 as a collaboration between the Cross River State Government and private investors, Cally Air has encountered operational difficulties in recent years. Officials have indicated that the inclusion of the leased aircraft will contribute to stabilizing services, minimizing flight delays, and restoring public trust in the airline.

Governor Otu reiterated his administration's dedication to enhancing aviation infrastructure, including improvements at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport in Calabar, to facilitate the growth of Cally Air.

Industry experts point out that this agreement highlights a larger trend where state governments are utilizing public-private partnerships to bolster connectivity and draw in investment.
