A 45-year-old woman has allegedly been subjected to fatal torture by the DSS in Nasarawa
The Nasarawa State Command of the Department of State Services (DSS) is facing allegations of causing the death of a 45-year-old woman, Salamatu Adamu, through torture while in its custody.
Adamu, a mother of two girls and a boy, was involved in a grain grinding business in front of her residence at Tudun Kofa in Lafia.
Reports suggest that the unfortunate incident unfolded following Adamu's arrest in connection with a kidnapping case. An unidentified little boy from the area had reportedly been abducted, leading to the suspicion that Adamu might have information about the missing child's whereabouts.
An individual, supposedly in DSS custody, claimed in a confessional statement that Adamu was observed chasing children who were allegedly obstructing her business.
The legal team representing the deceased's family, led by Abubakar Abubakar Dogara and eight others from A. A. Dogara & Co, lodged a formal complaint letter to the Director General of the DSS at the National Headquarters in Abuja.
Dated November 17, 2023, the letter alleged the unlawful detention, torture, and subsequent death of Salamatu Adamu, urging a comprehensive investigation and the pursuit of justice.
Mr. Musa Shittu Mohammed, the deceased's husband, appealed to the DSS Director General for a fair and just resolution.
The family's legal representative emphasized that should justice be denied, they would be compelled to pursue legal avenues against the security establishment.
A witness, preferring to remain unidentified, disclosed that Salamatu was forcibly abducted by individuals in black attire, forcefully placed into a vehicle, and subjected to physical abuse. According to the witness, she was compelled to kneel down while enduring the assault.
The DSS spokesperson in Nasarawa, Mr. Muhammed Musa, refrained from commenting on the issue, stating that he required permission from the national headquarters.
The national spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, pledged to share information once properly informed but had not responded as of the compilation of this report.
