Sanwo-Olu to commission Nigeria’s largest safety footwear factory

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is set to inaugurate the largest safety footwear manufacturing plant in Nigeria, owned by Yikodeen Company Limited, marking a significant advancement for local production and industrial growth.

A statement released on Monday highlighted that Yikodeen will formally debut its newly enlarged, cutting-edge facility in Lagos.

It mentioned, "The commissioning event, planned for June 24, 2025, will be presided over by the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and will include the presence of esteemed dignitaries from various sectors including government, industry, and traditional institutions."

"The occasion is anticipated to be a crucial milestone not just for Yikodeen but for Nigeria’s overall industrial goals. With the completion of this expansion, Yikodeen boasts West Africa's largest safety footwear manufacturing plant, a 120,000-square-foot facility capable of producing 5,000 pairs of safety boots daily."

"This marks a staggering 250-fold increase from the company’s modest beginnings in 2016, when it produced only 20 pairs per day."

"Attendees of the forthcoming ceremony are expected to include traditional leaders such as His Royal Majesty Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, and His Royal Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, the Olu of Warri. Also present will be Felix Ogbe, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, whose attendance highlights the Board’s ongoing dedication to indigenous capacity building in key industrial areas. The Chairman of Yikodeen’s Board of Directors, Ajibola Akindele, will serve as Chief Host and welcome guests alongside Yikodeen’s leadership team."

The CEO of Yikodeen Company Limited, Atunde Olayinka, referred to the commissioning as more than just a ceremonial occasion, emphasizing its significance for industrial progress and local manufacturing.

“It signifies our commitment; a representation of what can be achieved when forward-thinking, local expertise, and long-term investment come together for national progress,” he stated. “We are not merely opening a factory; we are creating new opportunities for industrial independence in Nigeria and across Africa."

"The upgraded facility is furnished with some of the most advanced manufacturing and quality control technologies available worldwide. These include automated European production lines, precision-driven quality assurance systems, and fully integrated processes that accommodate a variety of products: industrial safety boots, educational footwear, and the rapidly expanding Yiko Plus athletic shoe line."

"The scale and efficiency of the new plant represent a strategic effort to lessen Nigeria’s reliance on imported safety footwear while fostering local job creation. Since the beginning of the expansion phase, Yikodeen has created over 180 skilled positions and anticipates hiring at least 20 additional employees as operations reach full capacity."

"In addition, the factory’s increased production is expected to contribute over N5 billion annually to the Nigerian economy through direct employment, local sourcing, and regional supply chain engagement."

The statement further disclosed that the expansion was propelled by a strategic investment from Aruwa Capital Management, a prominent Nigerian private equity fund that supports women-led enterprises.
