Ogun targets 100,000 farmers for capacity building

The Ogun State Government said on Friday that it plans to register an extra 100,000 farmers through the Ogun State Farmer Information Management System in order to improve their knowledge and capacity for best agricultural practices.

Dr Bolu Owotomo, Commissioner for Agriculture, made the announcement during a session on Farmers and Value Chain Actors Registration at the Ogun State Economic Transformation Project training hall, OPIC Plaza, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta, the state capital.

According to the release, Owotomo added that the latest capture will increase the overall number of registered farmers to 160,000.

He went on: "This workshop is aimed at training 86 enumerators and supervisors and register them to gather information on farmers to enrich the state's database."

The commissioner, emphasizing the need of precise registration, added that the program is likely to promote the state's agricultural sector by providing full statistics on farmers and value chain participants, hence improving the state's food security and economic growth.

Mrs. Mosunmola Owo-Odunsi, the State Coordinator of OGSTEP, noted that the session was intended to instruct enumerators on how to register farmers and VCAs in the OGFIMS.

Mr. Lava Kumar, team head and Project Consultant at OGFIMS, stated that the enumerators would assist bring more farmers into the digital platform by connecting them with agricultural stakeholders.

Kumar stated that the platform will serve as a reservoir of information and expertise for the state's farmers.
