Nigeria records 14,000 applications under new e-visa scheme

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has revealed that Nigeria's newly implemented electronic visa (e-visa) system has successfully handled over 14,000 applications in its initial six weeks.

He made this announcement on Monday during a workshop aimed at informing stakeholders about key innovations brought forth by the Nigeria Immigration Service in Abuja.

He indicated that the electronic Combined Expatriate Residence Permit and Aliens Card, along with the electronic Temporary Work Permit, will be launched within the upcoming week.

He highlighted the effectiveness of the new system, observing that more than 14,000 visa applications were processed during the first six weeks of the e-visa rollout.

“This is a significant achievement, and I assure you that the minor issues we encountered will be resolved within the next one to two weeks. We are already addressing them,” he stated.

The Interior Minister expressed that the e-visa system was created not only to improve migration management but also to act as a catalyst for economic advancement.

“In my view, when someone requires a visa to enter Nigeria, they shouldn't have to rely on connections with high officials like the minister, the CG Immigration, or the Permanent Secretary. That is not a productive way to foster growth in a nation.

“We need to streamline the visa issuance process while maintaining our national security. A strategic approach is necessary.

“I want to assure you that the e-visa is established and, with God's grace, is here to stay,” he affirmed.

However, Tunji-Ojo remarked that the e-border solution has significantly strengthened Nigeria's border security framework.

“We may not yet be at our ultimate goal, but we have certainly made progress from our previous situation.

“Improvements have been made, and the truth is, we will keep investing in our e-border governance.

“We will increase our presence on the ground to ensure that every inch of Nigeria's border is secured,” he added.
