Lagos adds 3,941 new parking slots to combat traffic congestion

To help alleviate traffic congestion, the Lagos State Government has introduced 3,941 new parking spaces in strategic areas throughout the state.

Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Commissioner for Transportation, made the announcement during the Y2025 Ministerial Press Briefing, which coincided with the second year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's second tenure.

Osiyemi noted that the project is a critical component of the Sanwo-Olu administration's aim to combat indiscriminate parking and improve traffic flow throughout Lagos.

"The new parking facilities are designed to accommodate thousands of vehicles, providing residents with safer and more organized alternatives to roadside parking," he told reporters.

He stated that the Lagos State Parking Authority was established to regulate correct parking habits and help advance the government's overall traffic management goals.

"LASPA was established to regulate illegal parking, eliminate obstructions on roadways, deliver a world-class parking system, and promote voluntary compliance with the Lagos State parking policy," he told reporters.

Osiyemi further stated that the state's parking strategy is separated into five key zones: Ikeja, Ikoyi, Lekki, Victoria Island, and Surulere.

"This strategic zoning is expected to streamline parking operations and minimize congestion caused by unauthorized parking practices," he told me.

In addition to the extra parking places, the Commissioner disclosed that the government had put 669 parking signs along major roadways.

"The signage will contribute to a better structured and user-friendly parking system," he stated."

Mr. Osiyemi asked vehicles to park only in approved places to avoid penalties, highlighting the administration's commitment to improving infrastructure.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has been actively impounding unlawfully parked vehicles around the state.

In the first half of 2024, a total of 9,370 automobiles were seized for various traffic infractions, including unauthorized parking, under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.
