Imo Airport makes history with first international flight to Saudi Arabia
The Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, has achieved a historic milestone by successfully launching its first international flight—a direct trip to Medina, Saudi Arabia. The nonstop aircraft, operated by Air Peace, took 315 Muslim pilgrims from Owerri to the Holy City on Saturday, formally beginning the 2025 Hajj journey. The milestone flight was conducted aboard a Boeing 777-300, one of the largest commercial aircraft in operation, demonstrating the airport's increased capacity to handle long-haul international services.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who launched the inaugural flight, described the development as "a symbol of progress, unity, and Nigeria's growing influence in global aviation." He lauded Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma for her efforts to develop infrastructure and promote religious inclusion.
"This is not just a routine flight—it is a powerful testament to how far our aviation sector has advanced," Shettima said.
Governor Uzodinma expressed confidence about Owerri's potential as a regional aviation hub for both Christian and Muslim pilgrims. "Our vision is to make Imo a central point for spiritual journeys in Nigeria, whether it's to Mecca or Jerusalem," he told us.
The occasion was also attended by major religious and traditional figures, including the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar III. The Sultan characterised the initiative as a significant relief for pilgrims from the South East, reducing logistical problems for foreign travel.
In reaction to questions over its involvement in Hajj operations, Air Peace reiterated its commitment to advancing national goals. "This flight is a clear demonstration of our capability and dedication to serving our country," the airline stated in a statement.
The historic flight heralds a new era for Imo's aviation sector, bolstering the state's position as a significant participant in Nigeria's transportation scene.
