The Necessity of a Second Runway for Abuja Airpor- Keyamo

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, revealed that the Federal government has initiated the construction of a second runway at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

Speaking in Abuja during a ministerial press briefing to mark President Bola Tinubu’s first year in office, Keyamo highlighted that the project has faced controversy and delays since the Obasanjo administration.

"The necessity of a second runway has long been a critical issue for the nation’s capital," Keyamo emphasized. "Operating a nation’s capital with just one runway poses significant risks. Imagine foreign heads of state visiting Nigeria and encountering runway issues. Where would we divert them? Are we willing to cancel conferences if they're affected?"

He further stated that contractors have mobilized to the site, and construction of the second runway has commenced.

In addition to this development, Keyamo underscored the ministry's commitment to strict compliance with safety regulations and enhancing Nigeria’s rating by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Keyamo also announced the resumption of cargo flights between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, emphasizing the significance of air cargo trade globally and Nigeria’s participation in it.

He concluded by expressing his determination to continue engaging with various countries to expand Nigeria's involvement in global air cargo trade.
