NNPCL emphasizes the vital role of natural gas in fostering economic growth

Mr. Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has reiterated the pivotal role of natural gas in driving economic growth and industrial development.

Kyari delivered this message on Wednesday during the public presentation of a book titled "The Rise of Gas: From Gaslink to the Decade of Gas," authored by Charles Osezua.

Highlighting the global recognition of gas as a vital energy source that sustains economic growth and propels industrial activities, Kyari emphasized the significance of documenting Nigeria's gas sector.

Represented by the company’s Head of Relationship and Stakeholder Management, Mrs. Oluwakemi Olumuyiwa, Kyari also stressed the importance of prioritizing natural gas production and supply, especially considering geopolitical dynamics and energy security in the global economy.

A statement by NNPCL spokesperson Olufemi Soneye on Wednesday quoted Kyari as saying, "With Nigeria boasting substantial gas reserves exceeding 200 trillion cubic feet and a potential to reach 600 tcf, it is imperative that Nigeria leverages this gas resource for sustainable development, energy security, and job creation."

Kyari stated that the book aligns with the Federal Government’s 'Decade of Gas' initiative. This initiative aims to maximize Nigeria’s abundant gas reserves for both domestic usage and international export.

The head of NNPCL further noted that as a crucial stakeholder, the energy firm has played a leading role in advancing the 'Decade of Gas' agenda. This has been achieved through strategic investments in vital gas infrastructure such as pipelines and processing facilities.

During his remarks, the author, Osezua, described the unveiling of the book as a significant contribution to Nigeria’s energy literature. He expressed gratitude to NNPCL for its support towards the book launch, emphasizing the company's commitment to fostering knowledge sharing and innovation within the gas industry.

Additionally, Afolabi Oladele, Chairman of the Impact Investors Foundation and former Group Executive Director of NNPCL, commended the book for its comprehensive insights into the gas value chain. He highlighted its relevance to policymakers amid the ongoing global energy transition.

Nigeria's adoption of gas as its transition fuel aligns with President Bola Tinubu's efforts to make compressed natural gas available to all Nigerians, replacing petrol.
