Abuja and Kogi experience blackout as power station collapses

Presently, residents in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and certain regions within Kogi State are encountering power disruptions due to technical issues. These affected areas fall under the jurisdiction of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company.

On Tuesday, the AEDC communicated to its consumers in Zamani Estate, Abacha Road Mararaba, Ruga Juli, and other sections of Abuja that a technical malfunction on the 33kv feeder k6 from AT9 Karu Transmission Station was the cause of the power interruption.

The management of Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc hereby notifies its valued customers of the ongoing technical fault on the 33kv feeder k6 originating from AT9 Karu Transmission Station, managed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria.

In a statement, the Disco identified the affected areas in Abuja as Zamani Estate, Abacha Road Mararaba, Ruga Juli, Old Karu Road, Glory Estate, and surrounding areas.

The AEDC revealed that the TCN maintenance team was diligently working to expedite the restoration of electricity supply to these locations, expressing regret for any inconvenience caused.

Prior to this, the TCN had announced that its maintenance crew would conduct scheduled maintenance on the TR3 45MVA and TR2 60MVA power transformers at its 132/33kV Okene Transmission Substation.

The maintenance was slated to occur from Tuesday through Wednesday, spanning from 10 am to 03 pm daily.

Please be informed that once the maintenance work is completed, bulk power supply will promptly resume to Abuja DisCo," stated TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah.

Additionally, Mbah announced that TCN had successfully commissioned a 100MVA 132/33kV power transformer at its Port Harcourt Main Transmission Substation, boosting the substation's bulk transmission capacity by 80MW. This endeavor, carried out in partnership with the World Bank, encompasses the comprehensive refurbishment and expansion of the 132/33kV transmission substation, along with the incorporation of three feeders and related equipment.

"With the installation of the 100MVA power transformer, the substation's capacity has increased from 180MVA to 280MVA. Notably, industries in the Trans Amadi industrial zone and surrounding communities outside Port Harcourt city stand to gain substantially from this capacity enhancement," Mbah emphasized.

Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu recently summoned the management of AEDC to address the deteriorating power supply situation within its franchise area.

Adelabu additionally called upon Sule Abdulazeez, the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, to address the worsening power conditions nationwide since the beginning of January.

However, both the Discos and the TCN have consistently attributed the diminished power supply to factors such as gas shortages, vandalism, energy theft, and other related issues.
