Nigeria's Flying Eagles initiated their journey in the men's football competition at the 13th African Games in Ghana with an unexpected 2-1 loss to the underdog Ugandan team. The match took place at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, Legion, as part of the opening Group B fixtures.
Ladan Bosso's coached team conceded an early goal but managed to stage a comeback, ultimately falling short by the conclusion of the match.
The Junior Cranes of Uganda demonstrated their early intentions by taking the lead in the 34th minute through Arafat Usama. The Nigerian side swiftly responded, with Sadiq Isiyaka equalizing with a composed finish in the 37th minute.
As the second half began, the Ugandans maintained pressure on the Nigerian defense, and Ivan Irinimbabazi secured the winning goal in the 81st minute.
Following the match, Flying Eagles coach Ladan Bosso acknowledged the need to address mistakes before the next game. He emphasized the importance of positive discussions with the players and expressed optimism about the upcoming matches, recognizing the potential impact of the next two games on their tournament journey.
"We engaged in discussions about football with the team, focusing on how we can rectify the mistakes we made and approach the upcoming matches with a positive mindset. It's crucial that the players express themselves on the field. While the tournament didn't start as we would have liked, the players are aware that the next two games hold significant importance. Nigeria's next match is against Senegal on Monday at the same venue, providing an opportunity to revive their prospects of advancing from the group stage.
In the 12th African Games in Rabat, Morocco, Nigeria secured the runners-up position (Silver) in the men's football event, narrowly losing to Burkina Faso in the final.
