Tiger Woods withdraws from Masters with injury

Tiger Woods, who limped through the start of the Masters' rain-delayed third round, has withdrawn from the tournament due to a fitness issue, organizers said on Sunday.

"Due to injury, Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the Masters after completing seven holes of his third round," Augusta National said in a statement.

The tournament hopes to complete the rain-delayed third round on Sunday morning before moving on to the decisive final round at Augusta National.

Woods is still recovering from severe leg injuries sustained in a car accident in 2021. He returned to the Masters last year, finishing 47th and describing walking 72 holes on the hilly layout as a victory.

For Woods, who has spoken about playing in pain and keeps a light tournament schedule, the weather-forced changes meant he'd have to play 29 holes on Sunday to finish.

Woods had struggled to make the cut on Saturday morning, playing in cold and wet conditions and occasionally limping. After the cut-line rose to three-over par 147, he made it into the final two rounds.

Woods matched the Masters record of Fred Couples and Gary Player by making the cut for the 23rd time in a row.

But Woods, who hasn't missed a Masters cut since he was an amateur in 1996, had a terrible start to his third round.

Beginning with the 10th hole, Woods made two bogeys before double bogeys on the par-5 15th and par-3 16th holes dropped him to the bottom of the leaderboard on nine over.

In his most recent previous start, Woods finished 45th at the PGA event at Riviera in February.
