Spanish motorcycle rider Falcon passes away following a crash in the Dakar rally

Spanish motorcyclist Carles Falcon succumbed to severe injuries sustained during the second stage of the Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia last week, as announced by his team on Monday.

"On Monday, January 15, Carles passed away. The medical team has confirmed that the neurological damage caused by the cardio-respiratory arrest at the time of the accident is irreversible," stated the TwinTrail Racing Team in a released statement.

Carles was a cheerful individual, consistently energetic, finding joy in everything he pursued, particularly his passion for motorcycles. He departed while engaged in something that was his dream – participating in the Dakar race," the statement noted.

On January 7, during the final stretch of the high-speed stage encompassing rugged rocks and winding sand dunes in the Saudi desert, the seasoned off-road rider from Tarragona, Carles Falcon, encountered a crash.

The 45-year-old was promptly transported to a hospital in Saudi Arabia via a medical helicopter and subsequently flown back to Spain, where he entered intensive care. Twin Trail Racing had previously reported that Falcon, a computer engineer by profession, had sustained a vertebrae fracture.

The Dakar Rally, renowned as one of the world's lengthiest and most challenging endurance races, spans 8,000 kilometers over 12 stages. This year's marathon concludes at the Red Sea on January 19.
